Civics Lesson for Me

This calendar from Congress.gov is very useful.

Turns out even a Presidential election junkie like can be downright ignorant. Here I was thinking Mike Pence had some kind of role on December 14. The Fourteenth isn't really important at all in this process, I now realize. The real date is January 6, when Pence presides over a join session of Congress to count the votes sent in by the states. Dec. 14 is when the electors vote in the various states. But there is no Constitutional requirement for them to do this on that date.  I think many of us took away the wrong idea from the2000 Election when Gore supposedly "went up to the last minute" in his challenge in Flordia, finally conceding on Dec. 13. The reason he crapped out at that moment is because he forced the issue in the Supreme Court and lost.
