When in doubt, treat everything that goes on in private between you and certain other people as being secret. This makes it a lot simpler to always keep a secret.
The average man, especially the average American, conflates honesty with reflexive candor. No lies are told when one's mouth is shut.
By keeping one's mouth shut, one cultivates a natural bond of trust with others. Wider secrets can be shared over time, once such trust is established.
Moreover, over time one's ability to keep one's mouth shut may be rewarded by worldly advancement and public notoriety such that it makes it much easier to always be in the middle.
