Yesterday I mentioned to J something that I thought was funny:
"Everything that's been happening lately reminds of a dream I had. It was so vivid. It last February, right before everything started happening, when everything was still normal. It was a remarkable dream that I still remember.
"I was at a huge auto race, the NASCAR type. Of course I don't normally go to that kind of thing, but for some reason I had decided to go to this one. It was in Florida. It was a brilliant sunny day and there was a huge crowd. Donald Trump was there. In fact he came in his Presidential limousine and he rode in it while they drove it right out onto the track. The crowd was cheering wildly as it went around as the pace car., leading the pack of cars in tight formation. Then the race started.
"But the forecast called for massive storms, and almost immediately after the race stared, the storms arrived, in waves of heavy rain. The entire race was postponed. It took several days to finish it. Very. frustrating. Nothing like it had ever happened.
"Finally they finished the race. All the cars had to restart to finish the one final lap. But it kept having false starts and they kept having to do it over and over. It was very frustrating. Over and over they did it. It seemed like it would never end.
"Then finally they had a clean start. But something terrible happened on the last turn---a horrific crash of that took out half the cars left, and left one of the cars completely destroyed. Everyone was horrified. They thought the driver of that car was surely dead. An ambulance came and took him away. The victory celebrations were somber.
"The driver went to the hospital and was on critical life support. But he not only survived, but by some miracle, in a short time he got up out of his hospital bed and walked away with his family, smiling and waving."
By this time J was looking at me with a wry expression. She had picked up on the joke right from the start, and had indulged me while I told the story. It wasn't a dream. Everything that I described actually happened. Ironically it was literally the first time I had ever watched that particular racing event in my life, back when we still watched television. Even at the time I watched all this, I wondered to myself if I had just seen some kind of surreal version of the year ahead, Of course, it was all just a coincidence. To believe otherwise would be to think we live in some kind of uncanny Simulation, as they say.
As for the race itself? In the end, the same guy won it as last time.
