Rain in the State of Maricopa

We got some rain this morning. Last night the wind had come up at evening. Hearing it I went out to the porch to retrieve my rice paper screen, which now has two punctures from having been blow over by sudden bursts in the last few months. The punctures are such that it still functions well as a screen from the sun in the morning as it rises over the neighboring building.

But today no screen is necessary. We weren't sure if the sky last night was from the smoke of fires nearby or from an approaching front. It turned out to be the latter. We just got good twenty minute soaking. It was the first time I had heard solid rain in many months.

I write this while listening to Youtube videos about the on-going audit that is happening in Veteran's Memorial Coliseum, the old basketball arena. Everyone calls it the "Maricopa Audit," because it is happening only for this country, which happens to dwarf all other counties in the state, as it encompasses not only Phoenix but all of its suburbs and beyond. It is practically a state unto itself. It probably should be one---the State of Maricopa. People in the Youtube videos speak about it as if it were one.

The rain has now stopped and the clouds are breaking up. We hope it returns. We badly need it, as much to put out the fires as anything else.
